„Tree day – successful action for foresting”
On March.12 2008 massive forestation action took place supported by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, public enterprise Makedonski sumi and the non- government sector under the motto “Tree day” – Plant Your Future”.1.020,40 hectares were forested with 2.035.000 trees.
Legal provision
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia “all natural resources of the Republic, flora and fauna, public goods as well as all the material items and objects are of particular cultural and historical importance, determined by law and have special protection” that is to say, the decrease of forests fund and wood regions is one of the greatest ecological problem in the world.
Based on various useful functions of forests, The Republic of Macedonia ranks forests as part of its natural treasury i.e. inheritance. The economic, social and ecological function of forests is very important for the sustainable development of the society, for improvement of life quality, especially in rural and mountain regions.
According to articles 27, 28 and 29 of The Law on Forests (Official register of RM number. 47/97, 7/2000, 89/2004 and 54/2007) the public enterprise is obliged to make foresting, care, cleaning, dusting, digging, irrigation, renewal of fired surfaces and etc. in accordance to Special plans for managing with forests.
Activities of Makedonski sumi for realization of action “Day of tree”, plant your future
Makedonski sumi has worked out action operative plan-concerning the realization of foresting plan (terrain preparation and planting material) for “Tree day”.
The Inspectorate of forestry and hunting, at the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and waters made inspections of the proposed 60 locations at the territory of the Republic of Macedonia. The stated locations are forested with appropriate types of woods according to the wood type biology. The expert departments of the public enterprise after the completed action of foresting prepared reports where they indicated all direct expenses with complete documentation with the approval from the Inspectorate, according to the anticipated standards for soil preparation (mechanized and manual by digging of holes) for foresting, the price of the planting material depending on the type of wood and other expenses.
The action was positively accepted by all government and non-government entities. And the conclusion is that such actions should be organized in future as well.
However, with the forestation on March.12, within the action” Tree day” the public enterprise completed only part of its obligations.
Creating healthy and quality trees is complex and long-term process which begins with planting of seedling, and finishes with growing measures, that is integration of these cultures and even further.
In the first 1-3 years of the foresting following steps will be taken: weeding, digging and filling.
Weeding (manual removal of weeds) will be done from the first to the third year of foresting in order weeds which are very harmful for the planting material in the first years of their development to be destroyed.
Digging (digging of soil around planting material)- is the most common method by which we enable permanent softness of the soil, which then leads to better survival of the planting material, provides mild water and air regime of soil and destruction of weeds from plants.
Practice shows that wood cultures should be dug three times in the first year, in the second year two times and in the third year only once, which totals six diggings in the first three years.
Filling - despite good cultivation in the form of soil preparation during foresting and all undertaken measures it can often happen that certain number of planting material dries. The filling will be done a year after foresting at locations where the planting material has dried. At those locations in the first three years planting of new planting material with the same types of trees will be done in order to get wood culture with planned density.
Watering is not recommended since foresting is made when the vegetation has not yet begun that is early spring, when it is rainy, and in autumn when there is no vegetation and when the raining and moist period begins which is most suitable for such activities.
Watering as a method for growing wood cultures is generally not used, except in some accessible terrains if really necessary.
The goal of these methods is to provide good conditions for filling and survival of planted seedlings and development of plants until they grow. In conducting these methods for growing, additional funds are needed, which will be used for specific purpose only in order this action to have successful closure – creating new forest areas.
